20mm, 25mm, 30mm: How Width Defines a Leather Belt's Impression
At FATTORIA del CUOIO, we offer belts primarily in three widths: 20mm, 25mm, and 30mm.
In numbers, it's a small difference.
But when worn, the impression around the waist changes completely.
Even with the same leather and the same buckle, a change in width transforms the belt into something different. Here, we will discuss where this difference comes from.

Width is determined by the overall outfit, not body type.
The width of a belt is not derived from waist size or body type. It is determined by the silhouette of the bottoms it's paired with and the overall balance of the day's outfit.
A belt is the only horizontal line in an outfit at the waist. If this line is thin, the gaze moves up and down freely; if it's thick, the gaze stops there. In other words, choosing the width is akin to choosing where to place the visual emphasis in your outfit.
Another criterion is the width of your belt loops. If a belt is too tight for the loops, the strap will ripple when inserted. Measuring the loops of your existing pants once will improve the accuracy of your selection.
20mm slims the waistline.
20mm is our brand's slimmest width. When paired with slacks or pants with a center crease, the waistline is subtly cinched.
Conversely, the 20mm slimness is also a great match for bottoms with volume, like wide-leg pants. It prevents the waist area from looking heavy, creating a contrast with the volume above and below, making it easier to balance the overall outfit.
Because it's thin, the three-dimensional quality of the mesh and the presence of the metal fittings become relatively stronger. The Calf Leather Mesh Belt CODINO (20mm・¥33,000) is one such piece that leverages this characteristic. By weaving eight 3.5mm-wide leather cords, it achieves a moderate thickness and three-dimensionality despite its slender 20mm width, and is combined with a decorative buckle and keeper. It doesn't look insubstantial despite being thin, thanks to this balance.
This width is easy to incorporate and doesn't overly restrict your choice of bottoms, from outfits with jackets and dressier footwear to voluminous wide-leg pants.

Why 25mm is the standard
If you're unsure, we recommend 25mm. This width is also the most central and numerous in our brand's offerings.
The reason is simple: it fits smoothly through the loops of most bottoms, from slacks to denim. It's neither too thin to look flimsy nor too thick to stand out. It can seamlessly transition between business settings and casual days.

The Smooth Leather Belt ARCO (25mm・¥24,200) is a model that straightforwardly embodies this versatility. ARCO means "arch" or "bow" in Italian. By adopting a gentle curve for the buckle, it softens the often linear impression of a belt. The strap uses a structure including a core material, providing a stable feel that is neither too thin nor too thick.
The lining leather uses nubuck. Although it's not visible, it changes the feel against the skin and how it settles when fastened, which is why it's a standard specification for our brand.
30mm creates a focal point at the waist.
At 30mm, the belt begins to take on a role within the outfit. It's a width chosen not to stand out, but to balance the top and bottom.
When paired with denim, chinos, or thick bottoms, a thin belt can sometimes make the waistline appear weak. 30mm strikes that balance. The Calf Leather Mesh Belt (30mm・¥28,600) is a piece adjusted to ensure the bulk isn't excessive, by giving width to the strap while still featuring a square buckle.

This season, wider belts are increasingly being used as an accent in outfits. This width also forms the foundation when used wrapped over outerwear.
Mesh: A different approach to width
Woven mesh belts are not constrained by fixed hole positions. Since the pin can be inserted anywhere in the weave, there is greater freedom in where to fasten it, allowing for adjustable comfort.
The method for choosing the width is the same as for regular belts, but the concept of sizing is slightly different.

Width is determined by the outfit, not body type. 20mm slims the waistline, 25mm fits most situations, and 30mm creates a focal point at the waist. If it's your first belt, 25mm; if you want to add variety to your outfits, 20mm or 30mm. Thinking this way makes the choice straightforward.
